Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has started a project for the improvement of the biodiversity of its forest, with the collaboration of Social Forest, a company dedicated to sustainable forest management, which is oriented to training and the labour integration of socially excluded or unemployed young people. The staging of the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya de MotoGP™ will be the occasion used to inaugurate the first forest area which was subject to these actions.
The 3C Sustainability Management of the Circuit (Consciousness, Commitment and Coherence), is the road map for the actions taken within the framework of the continuous improvement of the ISO 14001 certification, which the Circuit achieved back in 2008. The Catalan racetrack is a sports facility that includes a forest area of more than 25 hectares, which are part of the improvement project. The aim is to create a dynamic and living green space with an environmental and social impact. In addition to improving the biodiversity of the forests in the Circuit, all those attending will have the chance to enjoy a more attractive and environment-friendly space.
The actions that have been performed included an inventory of the health condition of the trees in the Circuit; the trimming of pine trees, the felling of the eucalyptus, the felling of trees affected by Tomicus, sanitary and improvement felling, planting of native trees, as well as the elimination of invasive species. In addition, as a circular economy action, nest boxes were manufactured using plant debris from tree felling in the area.
This initiative is the result of a circular funding generated by means of sustainable circular economy action. With the funds raised from the reusable cups that were not returned during the last season, it became possible to fund the Circuit Forest project.
During the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya de MotoGP™ the Circuit will be carrying out the KISS (Keep it Shiny and Sustainable) Barcelona programme by FIM Ride Green, which will be joined by the Green Meeting Point platform of the Circuit in order to boost together a set of actions – such as the reusable cups – to raise awareness among the attending spectators about the need to care for the environment.
Within this context, on Monday 17 June, the first action point will be inaugurated, the forest in the Crater area, located next to the RACC School and the Member Area. With the MotoGP™ World Championship circus still at the Circuit staging a test day, the inauguration event will take place in the afternoon, with the attendance of the rider Marc Márquez, Ride Green ambassador; representatives of the FIM; representatives of Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya; the founder of the Social Forest, Joachim Englert; and a group of pupils of a school from Parets del Vallès.
