The season opener for the new GP3 Series raises the curtain this weekend during the FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO DE ESPAÑA PIRELLI 2017. On Friday, the first free practice of the feeder series was clinched by Nirei Fukuzumi (Art Grand Prix) -who seems to be the main candidate to the top step of the podium. His 1:35.933 fastest lap remained unbeaten during the 45 minute practice. Indian driver Arjun Maini (Jenzer Motorsport) and Argentinean Marcos Siebert (Campos Racing) claimed second and third place in a nerve-racking final lap.
George Russel, a consolidated FIA F3 contender, finished fifth fastest -4 tenths of a second adrift- for Art Racing, and heralds a fierce competition in the series. Former F1 driver Jean Alesi’s son, Giuliano, conquered 15th place for Trident.
This free practice was a small taste of tomorrow’s meaty GP3 agenda. Track activities will be inaugurated with the series qualifying at 9.45 am, and the first race this season is scheduled for 22 laps, starting at 5.15 pm, at the Barcelona – Catalunya racetrack.
