Jorge Martín is proclaimed MotoGP™ World Champion at the Circuit

He did so in the framework of the Motul Solidarity Grand Prix of Barcelona, an exceptional charity event that raised funds for the victims of the flash flood in Valencia and closed this spectacular World Championship 2024.

Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has wrapped up a weekend full of strong emotions. Solidarity and sport went hand in hand during the Motul Solidarity Grand Prix of Barcelona, an event that not only closed the 2024 season and crowned Jorge Martín as the new MotoGP™ champion, but also provided an additional way of helping all those affected by the consequences of the Valencia flash flood. This support has also come from thousands of fans, who have made the Circuit hang the ‘sold-out’ sign.

17 November 2024 will go down in history as one of the most significant days for Spanish motorcycling. Jorge Martín has won his first MotoGP™ title and joined the select club of Àlex Crivillé, Jorge Lorenzo, Marc Márquez and Joan Mir. Martinator has also become the first independent rider to win a premier class title.

He did so with a third position in the great final battle, which pitted him directly against Pecco Bagnaia, the day’s winner. Bagnaia gave his all at the Circuit to reduce the Spaniard’s advantage: pole, victory in the sprint race and victory today. Even so, it wasn’t enough to stop Martín’s aspirations. Bagnaia led the entire race impeccably, without making a single mistake.

Marc Márquez was in charge of putting the pressure on the Italian and, although at times it looked like he could overtake him, the Catalan rider settled for second place, behind his teammate from 2025 onwards. With these results, the last top 3 of the season has been a real spectacle, adding nine MotoGP™ titles on the podium of Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. In addition to the quality of all of them, there was a great display of sportsmanship, with Bagnaia joining the celebration of the champion who takes over from him.

Today was a day of celebration, but also of farewells. Aleix Espargaró brought his career to an end at the circuit where he grew up. And he did it with a very special race, in which he became the squire of his friend Jorge Martín. Espargaró overtook and held off Enea Bastianini, who seemed to be a threat to Martín given his good pace. He not only held the Italian in his place, but also put on a great show for the fans. In the end, a skilful Álex Márquez beat him to fourth position.

Jorge Martín: ‘I’m a world champion. It sounds spectacular. I’m in complete shock. In the last laps I couldn’t even ride, I started to cry. This is dedicated to my people and to all of Valencia. I want to enjoy and live this moment.

Moto2: Final duel between Canet and Gonzalez

The final Moto2™ race offered 21 laps of pure excitement. The focus was on the leading group, which ended up splitting into two battles. The first was between Arón Canet (Fantic Racing) and Manu González (Gresini Moto2) for the win. With a start that went in Gonzalez’s favour, Canet managed to find the perfect gap towards the end of the race to take the lead. Although Gonzalez tried to reverse the situation, Canet was able to secure the gold medal that tasted like glory..

The other main focus of attention was on Ai Ougra (MT Helmets-MSI) and Diogo Moreira (Italtrans Racing Team). The rivals had an exciting fight on the last lap. Ogura waited until turn 10 to overtake the Brazilian, but the latter returned the manoeuvre on the main straight, just a few metres from the chequered flag. In the end, 91 thousandths of a second separated Canet from Gonzalez and 43 thousandths of a second separated Moreira from Ogura, who finally missed out on the podium but still had the satisfaction of being the season’s champion.

Moto3™: David Alonso, the rider with the most victories in a season

David Alonso has set a precedent this year that will be hard to beat. The Moto3™ champion signed his 14th victory of the season out of a total of 20 races, surpassing Marc Márquez’s all-time record of 13 wins in a season in MotoGP 2014. Numbers don’t lie, and David Alonso is from another planet. The CFMoto Valresa Aspar Team rider, as usual, has used strategy. Alonso is pure thought, and despite leading on several occasions, the champion faced the last lap from fourth position. But that was no obstacle, as he took the controls to continue making history.

Daniel Holgado (Red Bull GASGAS Tech 3) is the rider who has made it more difficult for the Spaniard. The rider from Alicante ended the season with a second place that helped him to seal the runner-up spot in the championship. These two heavyweights were in a large group in which Adrián Fernández also stood out. The Leopard Racing rider, despite crossing the finish line in third position, missed out on the podium after receiving a penalty for going wide at turn 1 and failing to return the position on rejoining. His teammate Ángel Piqueras took over the last step of the podium.
