After an intense year of gradual return to normality, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has designed a very interesting and complete calendar. The 2022 sporting year will feature a total of 18 events across a wide range of disciplines and some of the world’s best racing championships.
Fans will be able to enjoy three dates with world championships: the FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO DE ESPAÑA 2022 (20-22 May), the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya de MotoGP™ (3-5 June) and the Catalunya WorldSBK Round (23-25 September).
As usual, the races with the Circuit’s own hallmark will also be present in July with the 24 Hours of Catalonia – Motorcycling and the 24H BiCircuit and in September with the 24 Hours of Barcelona-Trophy Fermí Vélez car race.
International motorcycle and car racing events will not be missing either. The European Le Mans Series will continue to be held at the Circuit, as well as the FIM Junior GP (until now known as FIM CEV Repsol). The International GT Open will once again close the season in Catalonia.
In April 2022 a very special and magical event returns for young and old, the Spirit of Montjuïc, which will bring together various championships on the same weekend, as will the Barcelona Speed Festival in October.
Fans of national competition will also find exciting weekends thanks to the Racing Weekend, the GT-CER and the Catalan Motorcycling and Car Racing Championships, among others.
2021 SEASON
Occupation
Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya closed the year 2021 with an occupancy rate of 83%, and a total of 302 days of activity in a year that has still been altered as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Of this figure, 216 days were allocated to rentals, while there were 86 racing days. Moreover, 43 days were used for works and different maintenance tasks.
In 2019 there were 317 active days, with an occupancy rate of 87%, while last year there were 185 active days and an occupancy rate of 57.3%. This season, which began with the same spectator attendance restrictions as last year, there has seen a progressive improvement to reach almost 90% occupancy in the last quarter of the year.
Attendance
This year, the Circuit started the season with several events staged behind closed doors, in order to ensure safety of all parties involved and with the aim of contributing to reduce the spread of the virus.
With the vaccination of the population and the control of the virus, the health authorities allowed the entry of the public, for which the Circuit created different and independent bubbles by zones. In the end, a total of 72,621 people have visited the facilities this year, a very positive figure, as it was not until the staging of the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya de MotoGP 2021 in June that a larger number of people were allowed controlled access.
Specifically, the GP de Catalunya was the event with the highest peak attendance, with 32,573 people. The Barcelona Speed Festival was second, with 6,000 attendees.
Impact in written media
As regards the media, the Barcelona-based Circuit was again the highlight on thousands of pages of written press in Spain, as the interest of the activities staged at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has been growing year after year. Activities that go far beyond the racing weekends, and deal with a large variety of activities staged in the sports facilities.
In 2021, the Circuit has obtained an impact in written media of €6,757,556, according to Rebold data, a figure quite similar to that of last year, which was around 7 million. A total of 1,555 pieces of news were published about topics dealing with the Circuit and its activities.
More commitment to sustainability
The commitment of the Circuit to sustainability has been reinforced this 2021 with the certification according to the ISO 20121:2013 standard for sustainable events for five of the most significant races: FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO DE ESPAÑA 2021, Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya de MotoGP™, World RX of Catalunya-Barcelona, Catalunya WorldSBK Round and 24 Horas de Catalunya de Motociclismo. The Catalan facilities have also renewed the Biosphere certification and the Three-Star Level of the FIA Environmental Accreditation programme.
During the current sporting year, the Circuit has accompanied the events with multiple actions such as the use of 100% renewable energy, the use of circular economy in waste management, the donation of food to a local social diner and the sustainable forestry care of the Circuit’s forest, among others.
30 years of history
The Circuit concludes its 30th year with another season of unique moments. Moreover, the commemoration of the anniversary, which culminated a few weeks ago with the Festa 30, gathered more than 14,000 people at the Catalan track. A new Circuit adapted to the principles and values of the 21st century, linked to sustainability, innovation and connection with the environment, was presented in an institutional event broadcast live on TV3, which thousands of people could also follow from their homes.
