The Circuit keeps a strong commitment to environmental friendliness and has been certified compliant with ISO 14001-2004 standard for environmental management since 2008. It was honoured with the “2012 FIM Environmental Award” for the “Green Meeting Point Project” that promotes sustainable mobility initiatives in the world of motoring, in order to minimize the environmental and territorial impact of mobility, which is the case of KISS Barcelona (Keep it Shiny & Sustainable).
Three years ago, the Circuit joined the KISS Barcelona (Keep it Shiny & Sustainable) environmental initiative as part of the KISS project promoted by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) in keeping with its environmental management policy. The aim of the project is to raise awareness among all parties involved in the world of motorcycling and to reduce the environmental impact of sports events though appropriate environmental management with, as the main focus, the management of waste produced by the public and the organisation during the Grands Prix of the MotoGPTM World Championship.
This year, the KISS Barcelona will also coincide with the World Environment Day (WED) on Sunday, 5 June. Thus and within such a special context, the Circuit will be promoting best environmental practices among all motorcycle fans, by means of different actions planned by KISS Barcelona during the Catalan Grand Prix, in line with the COP21 agreement which counts on a first class ambassador: the rider Marc Márquez.
> KISS Barcelona Stand: it will be an environmental education and information point for all the initiatives carried out in Catalonia with the aim of raising the awareness of society about environmental protection with the collaboration of Xarxa de Custòdia del Territori, la Xarxa de Voluntariat Ambiental de Catalunya (Nature Week) and Obrador del Tercer Sector Ambiental (“I am an environmental donor”). These initiatives are supported by the Department of Territory and Sustainability of the Catalan Government. The stand will be located behind the Grandstands of the Stadium area.
> Ride Green Area: inauguration of the “Ride Green” area in the Stadium area of the Circuit, with the presence of some riders and authorities.
> KISS Barcelona Bag: Spectators coming out to Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will have the chance to take this bag, produced with organic material with the collaboration of Interlimp Grupo Sirsa. The bag will promote the reduction of the environmental impact of waste during the MotoGP™ GP, as there will be containers made available all over the Circuit for the selective waste collection.
> Re-usable cup: these cups will help to disseminate the message of the 3 Rs (reduce, re-use and recycle) with the special edition for 2016 which includes the signature of Marc Márquez. The cups can be purchased at the Aramark catering points in the spectator areas.
> Food donation: on Sunday, the food excess of the weekend will be donated to the social dining house “El Xiprer” in Granollers, a shelter for people with economic problems.
> “Slow Food”: local gastronomy culture offer and Km 0 of the Tapas GP area.
> “Stop Food Waste”: awareness raising posters with the message “Stop Food Waste” at the catering points managed by Aramark. According to the FAO 1.3 tons of food are wasted every year.
> Environmental awareness raising at the Kids’ Zones: didactic drawing material will be distributed at the leisure areas for kids, promoting different values, such as nature, the species at risk of extinction, flora and fauna, in line with the motto of the WED “Go wild for life” (defending animals at risk of extinction).
> #KISSBarcelona Contest: Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will use its social media channels to start a contest in which participants will have to publish a positive action for the environment carried out during the Grand Prix using the hashtag #KISSBarcelona. A Paddock pass for the winner and one accompanying person will be raffled among all participants including VIP access to the FIM Hospitality area.
> Drawing contest for students: The pupils of a school in Barcelona will take part in a drawing contest with environmental topics. The prize will be a visit to the pit garage of Marc Márquez on Monday, 6 June after the MotoGP™ tests. A total of 10 little artists will get the chance to meet the World Champion and talk about environmental issues with the KISS Barcelona ambassador.
> Dissemination of sustainable mobility: the Circuit will promote the use of sustainable means of transport to attend the Gran Premio de Catalunya de MotoGP™, i.e. public transport (train or bus) and the bicycle. For the first time, bicycle riders will have this year their own parking site in order to facilitate the access to all types of sustainable means of transport. The Catalan racetrack does also recommend all spectators travelling by motorbike or car to optimize the use of spaces in their private vehicles.
The animations in the spectator areas during the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya de MotoGP™ will also promote the environmental values of KISS Barcelona.
